What to know before you commit.
Certifications: which one your part actually requires
ISO 9001:2015 is the baseline quality management standard, and it is what separates a shop with documented processes, corrective action, and management review from one that runs on habit. For any repeat production part it is close to a minimum requirement, and a shop without it should be treated as higher risk regardless of how good the sample looks.
Above that, the certification is industry specific. AS9100D builds on ISO 9001 for aerospace and defense, adding first article inspection, formal risk management, configuration control, and counterfeit part prevention. ISO 13485 is the medical device equivalent. IATF 16949 covers automotive production. Separately, ITAR registration is not a quality standard at all: it is a US State Department registration governing defense articles and the technical data that describes them, which means a shop handling controlled prints must be registered and must keep that data inside the United States. Ask for the certificate itself rather than the logo on the website, and read the scope, because a certificate can cover one facility or one process and not the work you are placing.
Tolerances, and why tighter costs more than you expect
Most machine shops quote standard tolerances in the range of plus or minus 0.005 to 0.010 inch, roughly 0.13 to 0.25 mm, on general features. That range covers a large share of real parts. Precision work runs tighter, and aerospace and instrument features are commonly called out around plus or minus 0.0005 inch, with some engine and bearing features tighter still.
The important thing for a buyer is that cost does not rise in a straight line as the number shrinks. A tighter tolerance means slower feeds, more finishing passes, tool changes before wear moves the dimension, temperature-controlled inspection, and more parts scrapped when a feature drifts out. Halving a tolerance can more than double the price of that feature. The practical move is to tolerance the print honestly: hold the two or three features that have to be held, and open everything else up to standard. Engineers who dimension every feature tightly out of caution routinely pay a large premium for precision that no assembly ever uses.
Reading a machining quote so you can compare like for like
Machining quotes are hard to compare because shops bundle differently. A complete quote should account for material, machining time, any secondary operations, surface finishing such as anodizing, plating, or bead blasting, inspection and documentation, and delivery. When one quote looks dramatically cheaper, the usual explanation is that it excludes finishing, excludes inspection reports, quotes from a cheaper material certification, or assumes a longer lead time than you asked for.
Ask every shop for the same things: an itemized breakdown, a price at two or three quantities so you can see where the setup cost amortizes, the lead time in business days, whether material certifications and a dimensional inspection report are included, and what a rush surcharge costs.
